INTRODUCTION
Learn to confidently understand, quantify, and price construction scope using Canadian estimating standards and practices.
 

This course provides a practical foundation in construction estimating and cost development. Through real-world examples, drawing reviews, quantity takeoffs, pricing exercises, and practical tools, participants will develop the estimating literacy needed to better understand how construction costs are developed, evaluated, and managed.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Understand the role of estimating within the construction process

  • Understand construction cost classifications and estimate structures

  • Read drawings and specifications for estimating and quantity takeoff

  • Identify labour, material, equipment, subcontractor, and other project costs

  • Perform basic quantity takeoffs using Canadian units and conventions

  • Understand pricing, markups, overhead, profit, and contingency

  • Develop and review a basic construction estimate

  • Gain exposure to digital estimating and takeoff tools

COURSE FORMAT

​​

  • Duration: 15 instructional hours

  • Sessions: 5 sessions × 3 hours

  • Delivery: Live, Online, Instructor-led | 6:30 PM - 9:30PM EST

  • Instructor: Industry professional with estimating and construction experience

  • Includes: Drawing reviews, quantity takeoffs, pricing exercises, practical activities, and course materials

  • Completion: ABCD Campus Certificate of Completion

Curriculum Details and Participant Information

​COURSE OUTLINE
​​​​
  • ​Module 1:  Construction Estimating Foundations - Understand the role of estimating in project delivery, the estimating process, cost classifications, estimate types, and the structure of a construction estimate.
  • Module 2: Reading Drawings & Specifications - Learn how to navigate architectural, structural, and MEP drawings and specifications, identify scope, and extract the information required for estimating.
  • Module 3: Quantity Takeoff Fundamentals - Develop practical skills for measuring and quantifying construction work using appropriate units, takeoff methods, and digital tools.
  • Module 4: Pricing & Building an Estimate - Understand labour, materials, equipment, subcontractor costs, overhead, profit, contingency, and other components used to develop construction pricing.
  • Assessment & Certification - Participants who attend at least 3 of the 5 classes will receive an ABCD Campus Certificate of Completion. The certificate recognizes completion of industry training and does not constitute a professional licence or authorization to practise.
